KALAMAZOO -- An 18-year-old with a criminal history, will spend 30 to 60 years in prison for the shooting death of 29-year-old Donnell Berry, the father of five, at the Fox Ridge Apartments in April. Darvion Bible had been charged with open murder, but decided to plead to 2nd degree murder rather than risk getting life without parole if convicted by a jury of premeditated murder.
He used a gun he had stolen from a burglary in the Westnedge hill area a few nights before. He is a habitual offender who was already on parole for other crimes when he committed the new ones.
There had apparently been bad blood between Bible and Berry that led up to the shooting. Several other gun felonies will be dismissed when he is sentenced on April 29th.
